The Birthday, Engagement, Funeral Party

For all the boys who have had to keep their gayness grounded in straight spaces

After a successful reading of his new play, The Birthday Party, Jay Dawkins meets with producers who are keen to take him & his work to the next stage. However, when some changes are suggested to make his work more 'relatable' Jay has to decide whether or not to sacrifice his artistic integrity for commercial success.

Born from a dismissal of queer stories on stage & written at the time of Angels in America & The Boys in the Band revivals, The Birthday Engagement Funeral Party has been shortlisted for the Hope Mill Theatre: Through the Mill Prize; BBC Drama Room 2021 & Longlisted for The Bruntwood Prize for Playwriting 2022.
