In 2014, residents of Fairbourne, Wales, were sat watching their local evening news when they found out that they were to be Britain's first climate refugees, with their town set to be decommissioned and depopulated by 2054. Housing prices dropped over night, insurance disappeared, & life savings were lost in the chaos.
This award-winning story follows the story of Ava & Josh: two siblings caught in the purgatory of a fictional but analogous town set to be abandoned. With dividing lines drawn and scapegoats hunted, the community is forced to pick up the pieces, or fall apart trying, whilst Ava & Josh’s very siblinghood is pushed to its limits.
Swell asks the question: how are we able to understand ourselves when the places we call home crumble around us?
