The Sequel is a comedy about the strange and destructive effects of an artwork on a place, the compulsion to record our experiences, and the consequences of when we do. Set in the present day, the piece centres around Grace Thoth, a renowned author who returns to the café of her hometown for the first time in nine years - only to find it is now a gift-shop museum dedicated to her and her novel. She meets two characters that both simultaneously worship and resent her: John, an old friend and the source of her book’s larger-than-life mentor, now a weathered tour guide exhibiting the various influences of Grace’s work; and Martha, the new café-manager, who appears to be an eerily similar version of Grace’s younger self.
The Sequel examines authorship, legacy, and stagnation, and how the stories we tell - about ourselves, our communities, and each other - can elevate people into myths and reduce them to objects.
